Once Upon a Smile was founded in 2011 and provides emotional and practical support to bereaved families.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a self-motivated and highly organised individual to join our team to help provide emotional and practical support to bereaved families at their time of need.

You must be an outgoing individual who would enjoy being a passionate advocate for Once Upon a Smile and the impact it has on bereaved families.

Job Purpose

To provide bereavement support to children and young people bereaved of a parent or sibling.

To work in a fun and creative way to promote positive mental health and minimise negative outcomes as a result of their bereavement.

 General duties

  • To accept appropriate referrals from the line manager and organise and participate in the assessment and planning process.
  • To support bereaved children through a range of fun based creative interventions, including group work, focused session’s and one to one support and activity days.
  • To provide information for bereaved families about grief and help them understand some of the feelings they may experience.
  • To provide support that encourages open communication within the family when a parent or sibling has died.
  • To find ways of remembering the person who has died, whilst coping with the challenge of adjusting to a new life without their loved one.
  • To provide families with the opportunity to meet others with similar experiences in a safe environment.
  • To assist in general duties as required by the line manager.
  • To assist in the continuing development of services to meet the needs of bereaved children and families.
  • To support with all aspects of administration duties including booking families in for assessments, answering the phone and updating systems.
  • To assist in the continuing development of services to meet the needs of bereaved children and families.
  • To support with the selection, training and support of volunteers.
  • To recognise and value the contribution of volunteers.
  • To attend relevant professional meetings and maintain effective relationships with referrers and other professionals.
  • To uphold the ethos of OUAS bereavement charity in what is offered to families.
  • To assist with the monitoring/evaluation of OUAS programmes.
  • To recognise the confidential nature of the charity’s work with children and young people and to act accordingly.
  • To complete clearly written, accurate, record of involvement with volunteers, children and their families.
  • To assist other staff with new projects relating to family support.
  • Work collaboratively with volunteers during group work sessions.
  • Participate in meetings, especially those concerning families you will be supporting.
  • Support volunteer supervision meetings.

Due to the nature of the work Once Upon a Smile undertake we will require the successful candidate to undertake a DBS check.
